Richard J. Peterson
M.D., F.A.C.S.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Richard J. Peterson M.D., F.A.C.S. graduated from the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Peterson interned and completed his surgical residency at the Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, holding positions of Assistant Resident, Senior Resident and Chief Resident.

While at Duke, Dr. Peterson was Teaching Scholar in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He also completed a National Institute of Health Research Fellowship, including joint research projects with Emory University. He then returned to the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and completed an Advanced Cardiothoracic Fellowship.

Dr. Peterson is currently Chief of Staff at Blake Medical Center. He was previously elected member at large of the Medical Executive Committee for Manatee Memorial Hospital. Dr. Peterson now heads the Medical Executive Committee at Blake Medical Center and serves on the Board of Directors of the hospital.

Dr. Peterson serves as a teaching consultant for St. Jude Medical, a diversified medical device company specializing in heart valve replacement and repair, atrial fibrillation treatment and pacemakers.

Dr. Peterson was formerly Chief of Surgery at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico. He began practicing in Bradenton, Florida in February 2000. His professional affiliations include:

In addition to his practice and his considerable outside activities, Dr. Peterson has written an important medical manual, pictured right.

This manual is used globally in training surgeons in minimally invasive high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) cardiac ablation.

Dr. Peterson regularly trains surgeons from outside the state regarding surgery for atrial heart rhythm abnormalities.
